Acknowledgements

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all who have assisted me, with a devotion and competence which has been especially noteworthy, in the task of preparing this symposium and its proceedings.

Mr. Simon Chater, translator to ILCA, made most of the translations from French to English.

Mme. Samia Khallaf, a freelance translator, carried out two-thirds of the translations from English to French, while the remaining third are the work of Mme. Anne Bouillon and Mme Bahri, translators to ILCA, and Mme M. Leroy, freelance translator.

I myself have revised all the translation, in both languages for their scientific content. Any error or misunderstanding is therefore my own fault, and I accept the responsibility.

My secretary, Miss Mulumebet Arega, took on most of the typing in both languages (2800 pages) and supervised the reproduction.

Messrs Hailu Lakew and Basilios Costantinos spent many an evening and weekend reproducing some 200 kg of documents for the symposium.

Miss Alison Gillard, assistant editor to ILCA, has shown particular competence and devotion in the difficult task of copy preparation.

The figures and drawings bear witness to the talent of Mr Admassu Wondafrash and his assistants.

The smooth running of the symposium from the technical point of view was due to the efforts of Mr Pietro Monaia. Finally, the difficult work of simultaneous interpretation was entrusted to Mme T. Gaillard, Mme E. Benamar and Mlle C. Mazaud.

Lastly, I should express my gratitude to the Director General of ILCA, Mr. D.J. Pratt, who was willing to relieve me of all other responsibilities for nearly a year and a half so that I should be able to devote myself entirely to the organization of this symposium and to preparing its proceedings.
